food for thought: redesigning the dinner plate

June 2, 2011

I’m both eager and surprised to introduce my column for foodspring.com. Surprised because my first piece poured out of me unexpectedly this very day after I read some interesting news, after which I proceeded to douse a Word doc with two or three thousand little characters in reflection.

Having been contemplating a “Food for Thought” column for a few months now, I’d been considering the angle and actual content I’d be writing. I’m no policy buff, but the national fascination with food, nutrition and health has seen a stark uptick, reminding us in entirely new ways how integral to our lives these edibles are. Not just physiologically, but psychologically, emotionally, socially.

So when I saw the big reveal of Choose My Plate, the desperately needed redesign of nutrition guidelines so poorly presented in the guise of pyramid for decades, I had something to say.

I can only hope this burst of effusive energy returns to me enough to keep up a momentum. Please read, and let me know your thoughts.

clip: sofi Awards Judging at foodspring.com

April 27, 2011

Judging for the sofi Awards, an esteemed annual food industry badge of honor, took place at our office last week. I hovered over the panel of nine judges as they coursed through more than 1,000 entries. That’s a lot of vinegar, pasta, candy, and cookies. And 20-odd other categories, tasted over three days. Palates of steel, these judges. Finalists have been announced, and winners are declared in July at the Fancy Food Show in D.C., hosted by Cat Cora!

More here.

i made that same gurgling moan when i saw it too

THAT, friends, is King Cake Ice Cream. You can imagine my delight. Or do, please, imagine my delight.

We’re partaking of D.C.’s cherry blossom festival, and per the norm, we celebrate with the most fitting food we could think of. Mmm real/artificial cherries…

Cherries Jubilee!

(I was way too proud of that title.)

March 3, 2011

I’ve contributed my first piece to Dwell.com, in the form of a slideshow (text AND photosmy favorite!). I visited the Brooklyn Museum over the weekend to check out its newly renovated Great Hall and get a sneak peek at its premier exhibit, reOrder, designed by Situ Studio. Two of the fellas on that five-person team kindly showed me around and chatted with me about the project.

Have a look-see at the final slideshow here. And go see the exhibit opening Friday!

A few of the shots I captured, below:

By the way, my coverage of the Fancy Food Show on foodspring.com: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3

Mind you, these were all written under conditions of gluttony, overexertion, and slight delirium.

Alas, I was too shy to approach Duff. Next time! (Summer show? Going, Duff?)

A fun one for foodspring.com: TV show–inspired cocktails. I’ve never seen a full episode of Jersey Shore, but I have drank a drink or two. Check it out, if you please.
